Joe's 5 Steps to Security E-mail

HackerIn these articles are Joe's 5 steps you got to do to protect your computer and yourself from "bad guys" on the 'Net. Based on years of professional experience, here they are, free to you. So be a friend of the Internet and do 'em!

Your computer is Shark Bait
- The Internet is a hacker's paradise! You and your computer are more of a tempting morsel that you think!

Know Your Perimeter (a.k.a.) What's an "Interface" and why do I want one?
- Computer and Internet security misconceptions abound. The concept of security boundaries is a great place to start for understanding the why's and how's of keeping bad stuff and intruders out of your computer.

Seriously, get a REAL firewall!
- A "REAL" firewall is NOT software on your computer, as it can't create a physically separate security perimeter between your computer(s) and the Internet.

The N.A.T. Freebie
- While not on Joe's "Top Five" computer security "must do" list, NAT is an extra, FREE security layer you get when you put in a REAL firewall.

Anti-Virus = Strong Medicine
Though not enough by itself, Anti-Virus is an important defense layer to keep "bad stuff" out if it's already breached your other layers of security.

Like Plugging a Black Hole (or... Patch That Thing!)
- Unpatched software and operating systems are the mother-lode to hackers. Don't let them get you because of something you forgot to patch.

Don't Step In It!
- Brain Cells... your #1 ally in the battle to keep your computer protected from hackers, malware and the like. Just a little attention and common sense go a long way in keeping the good stuff in, and the bad guys out!
