How to Install a REAL Firewall (part3) E-mail

So fire up your browser (IE, Firefox, etc.) and in the address bar, put in http://192.168.1.1 then hit enter.

Login box

You'll get a login box. Almost all these things use admin, then password admin for login. If that didn't work try admin with password of 1234. We'll change the password as part of the set up.

You'll first see the "Basic Setup" page. You can leave everything alone except check your DNS settings under DHCP server. If they are 0.0.0.0 or blank, go ahead and enter the DNS settings you wrote down a bit ago then click "Apply."

Some Internet providers try to prevent you from doing this very activity - sharing one Internet connection amongst multiple computers with a router/firewall and they set your internet access to your computer's Physical address.

This is also called a MAC address. If you're not getting to the Internet, then go ahead and enter here, the Physical address you wrote down before. This "fakes" your computer's MAC address to the router/firewall's WAN port. Your Internet provider will no longer be able to tell anything change. To them it will appear as if your computer is still connected directly to you cable or dsl modem.

Next click "Security" and make sure your "Firewall" settings have at least these checked:

The "Access Restrictions" tab is useful if you want to restrict times the Internet is available (like if you have kids) and if you want to filter (block) any key words. Keyword blocking here is really weak, that is, there's so many you might want to block (again assuming kids) there's no way this little screen could begin to cover everything you might want to block. If this is a feature you REALLY WANT products by Fortinet and Sonicwall have much more sophisticated technology for this.
